The Day-Date has never been merely a watch. Since 1956 it has been Rolex's statement of intent: the first wristwatch to spell out the day of the week in full, on a case in solid gold or platinum. A simple idea, almost obvious today, but in the post-war years it was a small engineering revolution — it required designing a new calendar disc, redrawing the entire movement, and certifying a level of precision never before achieved in series production.
Sixty years on, the calibre 3255 with its Chronergy escapement has redefined that precision without betraying a single line of the style. It is a movement with 14 patents, a 70-hour power reserve and a tolerance of –2/+2 seconds a day, certified as a Rolex Superlative Chronometer. In practical terms, this watch is more accurate than most twentieth-century pocket chronometers. And it does it in a case 11.8 mm thick.
The 40 mm case, introduced in 2015 to replace the historic 36, corrected the one criticism the collector community levelled at the reference: proportions finally aligned with the contemporary wrist, without sliding into the ostentation of a 42 or a 44. The President bracelet remains the code you recognise from across a room — three semi-circular links, a concealed Crownclasp — while the dial is the real arena for personalisation: fluted motif, meteorite, mother-of-pearl, onyx, aventurine, baguette-cut diamonds.
On the secondary market the yellow gold Day-Date 40 with champagne dial has settled around €38,000-42,000, a 12-18% premium over boutique list — a very modest premium compared with the 2021-2022 peaks, when the same reference touched €55,000. Platinum references with ice blue dials still trade at premiums of 25-35%, while gem-set dials are valued case by case according to provenance.

The most common mistake on used Day-Dates is underestimating the importance of the original President bracelet. An after-market bracelet, or one relinked incorrectly, can knock 15-20% off the value of the piece. Before any secondary-market purchase, check that the end links are numbered consistently with the case serial and that the link screws show no sign of repeated opening.
On servicing, a full overhaul at a Rolex Service Centre runs to roughly €900-1,100 for the Day-Date 40, with a recommended interval of ten years — far less often than low-end jewellers would have you believe. Intermediate services, replacing the gaskets that maintain water resistance, cost €250-350 and should be done every five years if the watch meets water.
In the saleroom, the Day-Date remains one of the few Rolex watches treated as blue-chip even by the most selective houses. Phillips, Christie's and Sotheby's keep placing it in their headline catalogues with honest estimates, and pieces with documented provenance — Paul Newman, Warren Buffett and Andy Warhol all wore one — have reached multiples of 20-30x over the past decade.
The rule holds: you do not buy a Day-Date to speculate. You buy it to wear for thirty years, for the geometry of its case, for the way the fluted bezel catches the afternoon light. Anyone hunting for investment will find better performers on the secondary market. Anyone hunting for a statement — of taste, of continuity, of belonging to a culture — will find in the Day-Date 40 the very definition of presidential.
