How to build your first watch collection in five moves

Rule zero: a collection is not a random set of pieces bought on impulse. It is a considered selection of watches that talk to each other, cover different moments of your daily life and — if done well — hold their value over time. People who build a collection without method end up with 10 to 15 mediocre pieces. People who build one with method stop at five or six, and the results are infinitely better.

Move one: the daily. This is the piece you will wear 300 days a year. It has to be robust, literally legible at a glance, suited to both office and weekend, and able to take servicing even under heavy use. The canonical choices are a Rolex Explorer 36, an Omega Aqua Terra 38 or a Grand Seiko SBGM221. Budget €5,000-9,000. Do not cheat on this piece: it is your authenticity test as a collector.

Move two: the dress watch. The piece you wear when jacket and tie are required. A slim case, under 10 mm, tapered lugs, a clean dial, a leather strap. The options are the Cartier Tank Louis, the Patek Calatrava 6119, the Omega De Ville Trésor, the Grand Seiko Elegance. Budget €8,000-25,000. This piece may sit still for months — when it is needed, it has to run from the first wind.

Move three: the tool watch. The piece with a precise technical vocation — diver, chronograph, GMT, pilot. It needs a recognisable history and a function you actually use. Rolex Submariner, Omega Speedmaster Professional, Zenith El Primero, IWC Pilot Chrono. Budget €6,000-15,000. Do not buy one just because it is iconic: buy one because the function it offers — timing something in the kitchen, handling two time zones while travelling — is genuinely part of your routine.

Move four: the weekend, or statement, piece. The one you wear when you want to enjoy yourself. An unusual colour, a visible complication, a more generous size. It might be a 1970s racing chronograph (Heuer Autavia, Universal Compax), a dress watch with a poetic complication (Ochs und Junior day-night, Jaeger Reverso Duoface), or something modern and quirky (Nomos Tangente 33 duo). Flexible budget — this is where you can afford an emotional mistake, because it is not a structural piece.

Move five: the grail. The piece that takes you into the club of serious collectors. It has no fixed rules beyond three: it must sit meaningfully above your comfort budget, it must have guaranteed liquidity on the secondary market, and it must say something about you that no other piece in your collection says. For most of our clients the grail is a steel Rolex Daytona, an AP Royal Oak Jumbo, a Patek Nautilus. But it can just as easily be an F.P. Journe Chronomètre Bleu or a Voutilainen Vingt-8. The rule is: do not buy it before you have completed the first four moves.

The most common mistake among beginners is jumping straight to the grail — buying the Daytona as a first serious watch, without building the structure underneath. The outcome is almost always the same: after 12 to 18 months the grail becomes 'heavy' to wear every day, it gets sold for reasons of personal liquidity, and the collection resets to zero. A solid daily is the foundation without which no grail holds.

Our practical suggestion: never exceed three purchases a year in the first five years. A collection is built calmly, with attention to the market, waiting for the right opportunity. People who buy three pieces in three months always end up selling two within the year. People who buy three pieces in three years rarely regret a single one.
