Cartier is the maison that invented the modern wristwatch. Before the Geneva crown dominated the conversation about luxury, it was the Parisian jeweller on Rue de la Paix that defined what it meant to wear time on the wrist with style. Anyone searching for 'Cartier Santos', 'Cartier Tank' or 'luxury dress watch' comes up against two of the most iconic and longest-lived designs in watchmaking history: a square watch and a rectangular one, both born as statements of elegance rather than as instruments.
The Santos de Cartier is, literally, the first men's wristwatch produced in series. In 1904 Louis Cartier designed it for his friend the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed to read the time in flight without taking his hands off the controls to pull out a pocket watch. The square case with eight exposed screws on the bezel — today the model's unmistakable signature — comes from the industrial aesthetic of the Eiffel Tower and the iron bridges of the period. Functional design turned icon.
The modern Santos — the Santos de Cartier collection, relaunched in 2018 — is available in three sizes, Small, Medium and Large, in steel, two-tone steel and gold, and solid gold. The real technical innovation is the QuickSwitch system, which lets you swap the metal bracelet for a leather strap in seconds without tools, and SmartLink, which allows the bracelet length to be adjusted without a watchmaker. Boutique price: from €7,150 for the steel Santos Medium to more than €20,000 for the gold versions. The movement is the in-house calibre 1847 MC with antimagnetic protection.
The Tank is the other half of the Cartier myth. Louis Cartier designed it in 1917, inspired — so the legend goes — by the view from above of Renault FT tanks on the Western Front of the First World War: the two vertical side bars, the brancards, represent the tracks, and the central case the cockpit. Since then the Tank has been on the wrists of Rudolph Valentino, Jackie Kennedy, Andy Warhol, Lady Diana and Michelle Obama. No other watch has a list of cultural icons so wide-ranging.

The Tank family includes several references it is important not to confuse. The Tank Louis Cartier is the purest and most classical version: a rectangular gold case, rounded corners, a sapphire cabochon on the crown, a hand-wound movement. The Tank Française, relaunched in 2023, has an integrated metal bracelet and is sportier and more everyday. The Tank Must is the entry line in steel, with either a SolarBeat quartz or a mechanical movement, from around €3,000. The Tank Américaine is the elongated, domed version, and the Tank Cintrée the curved, dramatic one loved by vintage collectors.
Santos or Tank — how to choose? The Santos is more versatile and sportier: the square case with its screws and the integrated bracelet suit both the office and the weekend, a genuine one-watch collection for anyone who loves a square. The Tank is more formal and more elegant: it is the dress watch by definition, the one worn under a shirt cuff, with a leather strap and a white dial with Roman numerals. Many collectors end up owning both — they cover two different stylistic registers.
On value, Cartier has enjoyed an extraordinary revival since 2022. For years treated as a jewellery brand rather than a serious watch-collecting one, Cartier is today recognised as one of the marques with the best style-to-value ratio on the market. The limited-edition reissues of the Cartier Privé collection — Tank Cintrée, Crash, Tank Normale, Pebble, Tank à Guichets — sell out within hours and double on the secondary market. The 2022 Crash London is one of the most speculative pieces of recent years.
For the collector buying a first Cartier, our collector board's advice is clear: the steel Santos Medium (around €7,150) and the mechanical Tank Must are the two smartest points of entry. They hold value better than the segment average, their resale liquidity is growing, and they are watches you genuinely wear every day. The gold versions and the limited Privé editions are a later chapter, for anyone who has already discovered they love the Cartier language.
