Royal Oak: fifty years of the royal oak

The Jumbo — 39 mm, 8.1 mm thick, blue Grande Tapisserie dial — is the Royal Oak in its purest expression. In 2022, for the reference's fiftieth anniversary, Audemars Piguet finally brought the movement up to the level of the iconography: the in-house calibre 7121 replaces the old 2121 (of JLC derivation) with a 22K rose gold oscillating weight, 55 hours of reserve and Côtes de Genève decoration visible through a sapphire caseback.

The case remains identical to Genta's original 1971 drawing. Eight hexagonal white gold screws on the octagonal bezel, an integrated bracelet with satin brushing across the flats and polishing along the edges, an octagonal screw-down crown. The 'Bleu Nuit Nuage 50' dial is the most explicit homage to the original 5402ST, but with a deeper tapisserie pattern and white gold transfers that catch the light in a completely different way.

The waiting list at AP boutiques for the steel Jumbo 16202ST still runs to three to five years. But the real question is not 'how long must I wait?'. It is: 'can I be the kind of client AP sells a Jumbo to?'. The answer is almost always no. Allocations go to long-standing collectors with documented purchase history across Millenary, Code 11.59 and complications. The Jumbo is not an entry-level watch at AP.

On the secondary market prices have settled at €90,000-95,000 — a 200% premium over the €34,500 boutique list. A lot? Yes. But it is the first Royal Oak piece to lose proportionally less value in a correction. Over 2023-2025 the Jumbo gave up 18% from its peak, against –35% for the Royal Oak Offshore Diver and –42% for the 26240ST chronographs.

The rose gold version (16202OR) is technically identical but emotionally different. AP's rose gold has a less pink, warmer champagne tone than Rolex's — it catches light more discreetly and wears more lightly under a shirt cuff. Boutique price €65,000, secondary €78,000-85,000. A more modest premium, because the audience for gold is naturally smaller.

On servicing, AP opened a second Service Centre at Le Brassus in 2023 with triple the capacity. Waiting times for a full overhaul have fallen from eight to ten months down to three or four. A complete Jumbo service costs CHF 1,400-1,800, including gasket replacement and selective repolishing of the brushed flats. Anyone wanting to preserve the original patina can request the 'heritage' service, which skips the polishing — strongly recommended on neo-vintage pieces.

The Offshore — born in 1993 from Emmanuel Gueit's pencil as an answer to American demand for a more muscular Royal Oak — had its season between 2005 and 2015. Today it is a declining market, down 38% from the peak, with notable exceptions for the Schwarzenegger collaborations and the original 'End of Days' models. Our collector board's advice is unchanged: if the choice is between Jumbo and Offshore, the Jumbo is always the better investment.

Anyone wanting to enter AP without waiting five years still has interesting alternatives. The 41 mm Royal Oak 15500ST — not a Jumbo, calibre 4302 with 70 hours of reserve — is more readily available on the secondary market at €45,000-50,000. It is not the Jumbo, but it has the right DNA and a more immediate wrist presence for anyone above 18 cm.

The Code 11.59 — the controversial 2019 experiment — is today the best way to build purchase history with AP. Boutique prices between €25,000 and €45,000, immediate availability, and genuinely interesting in-house movements, especially the integrated chronograph calibre 4401. We do not see it as a collectible, but as a considered way in for anyone who wants to reach the Jumbo within a human timeframe.
